Feeding the Cooper's Hawk

While I was busy doing some household chores inside this afternoon, I heard a loud "thunk" come from our kitchen. I quickly assumed the noise to be my neighbor, who is presently working some exterior remodeling...so I didn't give it a second thought. But a moment later when a large bird was flapping near the kitchen patio window - that sure got my attention!
It was a Cooper's Hawk, now majestically perched on our patio railing. Because I had taken a few steps toward the window, it became alerted to my presence and quickly flew off. Once at the window, I discovered the source of the loud noise was a Morning Dove, now lifeless on the ground (which also left a matching window imprint with some contour feathers).
Realizing the situation, I felt a little bad about having denied the hawk its warm lunch. I looked outside in the direction where the Cooper's had flown, but I couldn't find it. So I decided just to leave the dove where it was and hope it would come back to get it.
After an hour, I figured the hawk wasn't going to come back and placed the dove in the garbage. I mean, who wants a dead bird by their feeders, right? A little bit later, Becky began yelling for me to come to the patio window. Sure enough, the Cooper's Hawk returned perched on the patio railing again, but was once again startled by us gawking so it flew to our neighbor's maple.
I fetched the dove out of the garbage. From the garage backdoor I tossed it high into the air, dropping it in the middle of our yard to ensure the hawk would see it and could easily get to it without us disturbing it. Within seconds, the Cooper's swooped down over the dove and then perched above it in our tree. I went back inside, joined Becky and watched as the hawk flew down next to the dove, hopped over to it, then pierced its talons into its body...and off it went to consume a cold, but probably still tasty meal!
