Windows: A Clear Danger to Birds

Here's a good article on a big problem for birds...

"No one knows what birds see when they look out at the world, says ornithologist Daniel Klem, but he's sure they don't see glass. He estimates that at least 1 billion birds are killed by flying into windows every year in the United States."

The article is food for thought. No explanation, though, as to how the researcher extrapolated a 1 billion count mortality from hanging glass in the forest. Nor did he explain how the experiment design (hanging glass in the forest, possibly in local fly-ways and with vegetation visible behind the glass) was an accurate reflection (excusing the pun) of reality - windows, only the most recently of which are inserted into local fly-ways, and many of which don't have vegetation/clear sky visible through them.

There is more information at www.flap.org:

"One hundred million to one billion birds die each year due to collisions with human-built structures across North America alone. It is the reflective and transparent characteristics of glass that make windows invisible killers. Birds see the tree reflected in a window, or the plant behind the window, not the glass itself. To stop these collisions one must make glass visible to birds."
