Lead poisoning in paradise: Loons threatened

"Lead fishing tackle is threatening the common loon and other bird populations in northern Wisconsin, and a campaign aims to offer fishers alternatives. 'Get the Lead Out' is designed to educate them on the dangers of lead to loons, swans and bald eagles. This year, organizers are distributing display cards outlining the hazards of lead tackle and providing information on lead-free alternatives."

Michigan has pushed this program for a long time now via the Michigan Loon Protection Association.. I was a 'loon ranger' for 6 years, but recently left the program. The president ignored many emails from me, where I have seen evidence of loons being harasses and ran over.. (the guy on our lake that puts up the buoys around their nests takes them down early for his 'fishing buddies'). But the MLPA would rather stick their heads in the sand on these matters. Until they reorganize and get a new president enstated, I'm done with them.
We always clean up fishing line/bobbers, etc whenever we head out with the boat.. they're an accident waiting to happen.
have an enjoyable holiday,
Cindy
