One flew over my house Saturday. I heard it and was lucky enough to be able to see it out the window from where I was, um, seated and unable to get up!
we'll be hearing them within a couple of weeks- they nest in a grassy area on property that borders ours. I've never gone back to that area, because I don't want to bother them.. so I'm content just to hear them, although we see good numbers of them in our immediate area. I love to hear them fly over at night too, it's so magical.
And I'm sorry you haven't felt well.. I didn't reply to that post for reasons we both understand. With spring on the way, I hope that lifts your spirits- birds have a way of doing just that.
Mike, I was late for work yesterday and as I was walking across the parking lot to the Courthouse a lone Crane came flying over the Courthouse Calling. I just stood there in awe. They seem so prehistoric to me in flight. I am fortunate living near Summerton Bog. Cranes are in the farmer's fields here. Also there has been an Eagle flying around our neighborhood and 3 have been flying around the Courthouse. Our neighbor to the south has 40 acres and I hear an owl in the early evening Calling, since I'm not a real birder the Call is one long, 4 short, one long. Sad to say I don't own a decent pair of binoculars and my camera is ancient, but I hope to soon purchase something to help me explore what type of owl it is, or is there a website that has the different Calls of an owl? Birding activity around here was unbelievable until it started to sleet. Carol
Alas, no - I can't hear them any more, they've left Paynes Prairie, where they winter down here by the thousands. During the second half of February we can see big noisy flocks circling over downtown Gainesville, catching thermals. It's a wonderful sight, but sad, because we won't see them again till November.
