The Importance of ANWR

"Researchers who conducted the first-ever comprehensive survey of breeding shorebirds in a hotly disputed portion of the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge have determined that the number is easily large enough to qualify the area as a site of international importance."

I learned my chops at Manomet -- low-key, dedicated organization doing great conservation work for 30 years or so. Kudos to Eagle Optics for their support.

When I see photos of a white sheet of ice and people say, "see, there's nothing there worth saving!", it just makes me want to scream. Ignorance needs to be fought by science like this.

Unfortunately, I fear getting them to recognize that there is something there is one thing, and getting them to care about what's there is entirely another.
