Quiz - Seven Sparrows
The preening quiz I resurrected form last fall still had the answers in the October 2006 blog entries, so I decided to find some previously unpublished (I think) photographs for a new sparrow quiz. In just a few more weeks, the north section of Pheasant Branch Conservancy will be filled with over a dozen sparrow species. It's also one of the few places I've ever had Harris's Sparrow in Dane County (besides my backyard). Are sparrows a challenge for you? Break out your field guide and see if you can identify the following seven sparrows – all photographed in southern Wisconsin.
Sparrow #1:

Sparrow #2:

Sparrow #3:

Sparrow #4:

Sparrow #5:

Sparrow #6:

Sparrow #7:

you are a very cruel man sir!
Okay, I'll take a stab (without field guide).
1: Lincoln's Sparrow
2: Clay-colored Sparrow
3: Song Sparrow
4: Vesper Sparrow
5: Field Sparrow
6: White-crowned Sparrow (imm)
7: Henslow's Sparrow (?)
Not at all sure about the last one. Henslow's Sparrows don't seem to make it to CA so I've never seen one. Could be Savannah. Great set of photos for a quiz, Mike!
The only one that's a challenge for me of this batch is the last one, since I have yet to see an Ammodramus in the flesh (or feather), at least well enough to know more than simply that it was an Ammodramus. In this case I think it's a Henslow's? I'm not sure I could rule out Baird's or a juvie, however, given my limited experience, except I probably wouldn't expect Baird's where you are.
For some, so difficult. And for others, so easy!
Mike
