Birds threatened by spill

Remember this the next time you're told by interest groups and politicians that today's technology for drilling and transporting oil won't harm the ANWR.

"The black oil spreading for miles from the Golden Gate is staining one of the richest wildlife regions on the Pacific Coast and threatening hundreds of thousands of birds as well as marine mammals and fish that feed around San Francisco Bay. Fuel oil, lighter than crude but heavier than gasoline, can kill birds, fish and other creatures. The 58,000-gallon spill into the delicate mouth of the bay comes at an unfortunate time for migratory birds, such as the 150,000 ducks that have just flown 2,000 miles from Canada's boreal forest to feed over the winter in the bay ecosystem, bird biologists said Thursday."

After reading the linked news report on the oil spill I offer the following excerpt from the article:

"Hundreds of reports of oiled birds from beaches ringing the bay and coast came into the hot line operated by the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. So many residents used the line to offer volunteer assistance that the network was temporarily shut down in midafternoon."

This is another heartbreaking story and one that unfortunately is bound to be repeated until we, as a people, demand change. We all know change comes slowly and can only be achieved on a large scale when even LARGER groups of people become interested and involved.

The silver lining to this tragedy is that they received so many calls of people wanting to help, they had to shut their phone lines down. I am hopeful that this increased awareness and interest by so many is a great start to educating more people on these issues.

The long term implications of this spill are not only applicable to the ecological problems that will ensue, but also to the people who take notice and hopefully become interested in changing the way we interact with our environment.

Election time is approaching
.....let us all remember and spread the word...

Which is why you don't drill for oil on the ANWR.
